Alliance barber shop quartet was formed in January 2004
after the quartet got together over a long weekend to try
out their combination of voices. Bass singer Danny travelled
all the way from his home in Canberra ACT to Perth for
the occasion and found it was well worth the effort. The
Quartet soon realised the sound they were making
was without a doubt good enough to warrant the formation
of a new quartet.
In June of that same year, after only three weekend rehearsals
, the quartet entered and won the AAMBS Western Region
quartet contest with a record high score. Later that year
the quartet travelled to Christchurch in New Zealand to
take part in the Pan Pacific Quartet Competition against
an international field of groups from New Zealand, Hawaii,
the West Coast of America, Japan and other parts of Australia.
The Quartet was awarded with the silver medal.
In October of 2005 Alliance had reached what was
described as the pinnacle of the men’s barbershop
harmony art form in Australia by being awarded a first
place gold medal in the Open Quartet Contest at the biennial
AAMBS National Convention.
Later on this year Alliance will be defending their Quartet
Champion title at the AAMBS National Convention at the
Darling Harbour Convention Centre in Sydney. Alliance are
also planing to begin work on their long awaited debut
CD.
Alliance Barber Shop Quartet is:
Ian Mulholland
Ian sings Tenor in the quartet. He has now won two AAMBS
National Quartet Contest gold medals, and has also competed
internationally. Ian was Co-Director and then Director
of the Men in Harmony chorus for 4 years, before joining
Vocal Evolution. In between, Ian is AAMBS Judges Coordinator
and a Music Category Judge. He has also served as AAMBS
National Vice President of Music. In his spare time Ian
also arranges music and manages to fit in his family,
which consists of a wife and two children, job as a geologist,
enjoyment of playing golf, and other quartet Bad Habits.
Adrian Gimpel
Adrian sings Lead. Before winning the National Quartet
Gold Medal with Alliance he had competed twice before
with other quartets at national level, each time finishing
in the top five. He is certified as a Presentation Category
Judge in the AAMBS judging program and is currently also
the President of the Vocal Evolution chorus. Adrian also
participates on the YIBDI Committee promoting voacal
harmony singing amongst young people. In the career which
actually helps pay his bills, Adrian works as a Public
Servant. He also has a wonderful family, comprising of
a lovely, charming and very understanding wife and three
children.
Richard Reeve
Richard sings Baritone and is a relative newcomer to barbershop
singing, having experienced his first competition with
the Vocal Evolution chorus in 2005. Richard arrived in
Perth in 2005 having been introduced to barbershop the
previous year by the Sydney Harmony chorus. He is no
stranger to music or the stage, however, having been
around amateur theatre since childhood. In his spare
time Richard is completing a master’s degree in
natural resource economics and works for the Western
Australian government. Richard is the only member of
the group still single, so feel free to direct all of
your romantic adoration towards him.
Dan Millgate
Dan sings bass. He has now won two National AAMBS Quartet
gold medals as well as two silver medals. Dan has previously
served as the Music Director of The Canberra Chordsmen
and is also certified as a Singing Category Judge within
the AAMBS judging program. He flies into rehearsals in
Perth from Canberra, where he lives with his partner
Lidija (sorry girls, he’s already spoken for) and
his two lovely daughters and works as a Public Servant.
In his spare time Dan likes to play golf badly, watch
The Simpsons, and come up with new and exciting ways
to irritate his fellow quartet members.
